One of the rewards of teaching is that it’s an inspiring and learning experience for the teachers as well as the students. That was the takeaway for Serena Ettelson,  a senior project manager with the Santa Barbara office, as she volunteered her expertise to the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s New Heights program at the Girls Academic Leadership Academy, a 6th-12^th grade public school in Los Angeles that emphasizes STEM education.

Serena taught “Introduction to Classical Architecture,” guiding students through the foundations of traditional design. “These were some of my favorite days of the year,” said Serena. “We’re not only investing in our future architects, but also finding our own reinvigoration by enjoying the students’ creativity and curiosity about architectural design.”

The objective of the New Heights program is to foster an appreciation of the practice of architecture through experiences in the classroom and in the field. The multiweek course is woven into students’ classes, featuring lessons from local architects and design professionals. The curriculum also includes structures classes and a hands-on plaster cast workshop, offering a well-rounded exploration of architecture.
