Because of its siting in a flood zone, this residence by Harrison Design is built above a loggia and interconnected arched open chambers which create abundant shaded areas that are ideal for the sunny, hot climate. The design is intended to evoke cool tranquility and to delight all the senses. Relaxed English-style landscaping juxtaposes the formality of the Anglo-Caribbean architecture. A folly serves as a retreat with an open-air living room and crow’s nest. Of varying heights, the palms are naturistically clustered and frame views. Materials and plants were selected to respond to the coastal conditions. Every element of the house—even a footbath—was carefully and artistically detailed, referencing classical motifs.
