Harrison Design was engaged by a Catholic mission parish in the Shenandoah foothills to design a church building for its first permanent home. Inspired by the community’s proximity to Thomas Jefferson’s architectural work at the University of Virginia and Monticello, the church’s design takes strong cues from Jefferson, and Jefferson’s muse, Andrea Palladio. The classical detailing, grand stair, portico, and dome establish the church as a noble presence in a rapidly growing city. The design also takes advantage of the change in grade to accommodate accessible design, as well as incorporate the parish hall underneath the nave.
