Senior Principals

Gregory L. Palmer

SENIOR PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, NAPLES

As president of Harrison Design, Greg leads the management committee and oversees the work and operation of the entire organization of six offices on the east and west coasts. He is based in the Naples office, which he opened in 2017. Greg joined the Atlanta-based firm in 1995 and brings an expertise in institutional, residential, hospitality, historical renovation and resort planning. His extensive knowledge of classical architecture and historically precise detailing informs much of the firm’s most illustrious projects, which have received numerous architecture awards and recognitions.

Greg is licensed to practice in Florida and 19 additional states and the District of Columbia. He earned a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering technology from the Southern Technical Institute (now known as Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, Ga. He serves on the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) Florida chapter’s board of directors and is a past president of the Southeast chapter. Greg is a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, the American Institute of Architects, and Naples Design District. He is on the advisory board of the City of Naples Community Redevelopment Association. In 2012 and 2022, he served as a juror for the Acanthus Awards of the ICAA’s Chicago chapter and in 2018 he was a juror for the Mizner Awards in Florida. Greg designed one of two homes that led to the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and Veranda naming the firm 2022 Southeast Architect of the Year. He also earned a 2022 Palladio Award and 2020 Mizner Award for a residence in Atlanta.

John J. Albanese

SENIOR PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, ATLANTA

After earning his Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, John received his Master of Architecture from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va. He began his career as a draftsman with a firm in Sayville, NY, before moving to Georgia in 1997. In 1999, John joined Harrison Design as a project manager and 10 years later, was named principal. He’s a registered architect in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. He’s a member of the American Institute of Architects, Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, National Trust for Historic Preservation and a certified member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. Since 2020, John has served on the board of directors of the Chastain Park Conservancy and in June 2022 he joined the board of the Bill Harrison Foundation.

Richard C. Hatch

SENIOR PRINCIPAL, ASSOCIATE AIA, ATLANTA

With bachelor’s degrees in architecture and architectural engineering from the Southern Technical Institute (now known as Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, Ga., Rick was named a firm principal in 2009. Rick started his career as a draftsman for an architecture office in Marietta and joined Harrison Design in 1998. Along with the American Institute of Architects, he is a member of the National Historical Society, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. Since June 2022, Rick has served on the board of directors of the Bill Harrison Foundation. He volunteers with the GA FIRST Foundation throughout Georgia.

Bulent A. Baydar

SENIOR PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, ATLANTA

While working with Harrison Design, Bulent helped establish offices in Santa Barbara in 2004 and Washington, D.C. in 2010. He is a registered architect in Connecticut, Georgia, Florida and Virginia, and received his Master of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture. He joined Harrison Design in 1995 and has been a principal since 2014. Bulent is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), National Trust for Historic Preservation and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He serves on the board for the City Springs Theatre Company in Sandy Springs. Bulent designed one of the homes that led to ADAC and Veranda naming the firm 2022 Southeast Architect of the Year. He also earned two Honor awards in 2022 from the AIA Atlanta.

Jesse J. Harrison

SENIOR PRINCIPAL, LOS ANGELES

Jesse joined Harrison Design’s Los Angeles office in 2010 as business development director. Prior to that, Jesse had cofounded a company in Atlanta that brands, markets and manages luxury properties for event, media, television and film partnerships. His previous experience includes directing a contemporary art gallery in Atlanta and specializing in marketing fine art for the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. He’s a founding member of UNICEF NextGen Los Angeles; is on the development committee of the Los Angeles Conservancy; served on the advisory board of DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS in Los Angeles, and is a member of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art.

Karen H. Ferguson

SENIOR PRINCIPAL, INTERIORS, ASID, ATLANTA

Karen Ferguson is the Director of Interiors at Harrison Design and currently serves as President of the ASID Georgia Chapter. A frequent award winner and inspiring leader, Karen brings a depth of expertise to every aspect of interior design—from space planning to selecting and creating custom finishes, furnishings and accessories. Her work spans a range of styles, each distinctive and carefully personalized to reflect the client’s goals. Widely recognized for her ability to craft warm, engaging contemporary interiors, Karen’s approach is defined by organic textures, thoughtful juxtaposition and an impeccable eye for detail. Her accolades include Second Place Winner in the traditional category of the prestigious 2024 Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove Kitchen Design Contest, Southeast Designer of the Year in 2019 by the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center and Veranda magazine, and ASID Georgia’s 2024 Best of Show Design Excellence Residential Renovation for her rustic-yet-modern lake house in Blue Ridge. She has also been honored with multiple Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Kitchen & Bath of the Year awards. Karen is a graduate of the University of Georgia, Athens, with a bachelor’s degree in furnishings and interiors. She is passionate about elevating the design community through mentorship, collaboration and leadership.

Anthony Grumbine

SENIOR PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, SANTA BARBARA

With his Master of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, Anthony joined Harrison Design in 2007. He received his bachelor’s degree in architectural studies with high distinction and a bachelor’s degree in art history with distinction from Carleton University in Ottawa. Anthony serves on the City of Santa Barbara’s Historic Landmarks Commission and the Board for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. He is a regular walking tour leader for a number of local groups, including the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation. An accomplished artist in watercolor renderings and architectural drawing, Anthony regularly contributes articles regarding architecture to a number of local publications.

Principals

Nicolas Charbonneau

PRINCIPAL, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Nic is the award-winning director of the firm’s Sacred Architecture Studio, which is based in the Washington, D.C. office. His accomplishments distinguish him as one of the premier designers of Catholic churches and classical schools in the country. Nic brings an abiding dedication to the noble principles of classical architecture, its forms and proportions, and draws on his experience in the construction industry. He has directed and overseen all phases of design for a diverse group of projects, ranging from large-scale ecclesiastical and institutional projects to intricately detailed interior renovations. Before joining Harrison Design in 2015, he worked with several Virginia and Washington, D.C. firms. Nic earned his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame with an undergraduate degree in philosophy.

Chad E. Goehring

PRINCIPAL, ASSOCIATE AIA, ST. SIMONS

Chad leads the firm’s St. Simons, Ga., office, which opened in 2006. He joined Harrison Design in 2001 and was a project manager in Atlanta before moving to St. Simons to establish the practice. He’s a graduate of Southern Polytechnic State University (now known as Kennesaw State University) in Marietta, Ga., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture. Chad began his career as a CAD technician in Duluth, Ga. His professional affiliations include the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, and he volunteers for the annual RSM Classic PGA tour event hosted by Davis Love III.

R. Derek Hopkins

Principal, ASSOCIATE AIA, ATLANTA

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University, Derek relocated from Raleigh to Atlanta, where he joined Harrison Design in 1999. With a portfolio that includes residential, multifamily, retail and hospitality, his projects span across the country, from Montecito, Calif., to the “Gold Coast” of Long Island, NY. Derek’s professional affiliations include the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). In addition to currently serving as Vice President on the ICAA’s Southeast Board of Trustees, he also serves as chairperson of the Membership Committee and chaired the 2023 Philip Trammell Shutze Awards in Atlanta.

 

Mark D. Hughes

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT, AIA, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Before joining Harrison Design in 2012, Mark led his own practice, Hughes Architecture, in McLean, Va. His work encompasses architecture and space planning for residential, commercial, historic, retail and hospitality projects in the D.C. area. For almost 20 years, he was a partner with an architecture firm in Bethesda, Md. Mark earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in architecture from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is professionally registered in Virginia and Maryland. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art.

Karissa Kizer

Principal Architect, AIA, Los Angeles

As a principal at Harrison Design, Karissa brings a passion for the iterative aspects of architecture. Her work consistently aims to strike a balance between endless design possibilities and strict building parameters. After graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Architecture from Syracuse University, Karissa worked in commercial architecture in Boston before settling in Los Angeles, where she joined Harrison Design in 2016. Drawing from her academic training and studies in Florence, along with many years in residential architecture, Karissa has developed an expertise for creating bespoke spaces that fulfil demanding client needs, often drawing on the rigor and proportions of classical architecture as inspiration. Karissa is a member of the American Institute of Architects and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited. She takes pride in her mentorship of younger staff, as she guides them through the complexities of the design and construction process and shepherds their professional growth.

Ryan Leehey

Principal, LANDSCAPES, ASLA, PLA, LOS ANGELES

Leading the landscape architecture studio for the West Coast, Ryan is expert in all aspects of the design process, including innovative concepts and overall project management. He has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture with a minor in sustainable environments from California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. Before joining Harrison Design, he worked with firms in San Diego and Tustin, California, and interned with resort planners in Beijing. He is an associate member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and is active with its Cal Poly SLO Chapter.

Barbara Lowenthal

PRINCIPAL, INTERIORS, WEST COAST

Since joining the Santa Barbara office in 2005, Barbara has led Harrison Design’s West Coast interiors practice. With a Certificate of Design from the University of California at Santa Barbara-Extension, Barbara’s work spans residential, hospitality and commercial design. Actively engaged in the design community, she’s a founding member and member emeritus of both the Pearl Chase Society Board and the Courthouse Legacy Foundation Board. Barbara is a past Docent Board President and member of the Museum of Art Docent Council. Previously, she was on the City of Santa Barbara Historic Landmarks and Planning Commissions. In 2007, Barbara received the Saint Barbara Award from the City of Santa Barbara for outstanding service to enhance and preserve the built environment of Santa Barbara.

Betsy McBride Sehgal

Principal, Interiors, ASID, Atlanta

Betsy is Principal of Interiors based in our Atlanta office. She joined the firm’s interiors studio in 2013 and went on to establish her own successful studio in 2019. Betsy holds two bachelor’s degrees: Art History at the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design from the Art Institute of Atlanta.

She began her career as a kitchen and bath designer working for several of Atlanta’s high-end residential design firms. A registered interior designer and NCIDQ certificate holder since 2018, her work has been recognized with multiple honors, including awards from Atlanta Magazine’s Georgia Design Awards and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Kitchen of the Year contest.

Emily Schickner

Principal Architect, AIA, Atlanta

Emily was named Principal Architect at Harrison Design in 2021 where she leads an award-winning studio. Widely lauded for her expertise in mental health and well-being in architecture, she is a highly sought-after speaker to help raise awareness of the field across the country. Before joining Harrison Design in 2017, Emily spent a decade in commercial architecture focusing on high-end private education and hospitality design. A member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), she served as 2023 AIA Atlanta Chapter President and currently serving on the Georgia Institute of Technology’s College of Design Advisory Board.

In 2022 Emily received AIA Georgia’s Emerging Professional of the Year Award. From 2020 to 2021, she served as AIA South Atlantic’s Young Architect regional director and, in 2021, she graduated from the AIA Georgia’s Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program. Among her recent accolades are being named to Georgia Tech Alumni “40 Under 40” list in 2024 and as one of Georgia’s Most Influential Leaders by GeorgiaTrend in 2023. Emily earned her Master of Architecture degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Along with the AIA, Emily is a member of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art and a certified member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Board.

Cerise Carleo

Senior Project Manager, AIA, Los Angeles

Cerise’s interest in architecture began at an early age while traveling with her family and drawing the new cities she encountered. As a distinguished cum laude graduate from the University of Southern California with a professional 5-year Bachelor of Architecture Degree, Cerise joined Harrison Design in 2015. She promptly completed her professional licensure in 2018, gaining the title of the youngest licensed architect at Harrison Design Los Angeles. She now serves as a Project Manager and Director of Architecture for the LA office, specializing in residential projects. Outside of work, she serves on the Education Committee for the ICAA and is a member of other groups, including AIA, Women at Work, and Soho House. For Cerise, architecture combines the freedom of design with the rigor and order of mathematics. She strives to find the beauty in everything.

Serena Ettelson

Senior Project Manager, AIA, Santa Barbara

Serena’s interest in architecture began admiring the historic buildings at Balboa Park in her hometown of San Diego. Following the completion of her master’s degree at the University of Colorado, she joined Harrison Design in 2016 and achieved professional licensure. In her spare time, she instructs courses with the Institute for Classical Architecture & Art and volunteers with the AIA, Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, and other local initiatives. Her favorite part of the job is the endless study of timeless details, and environmental mindfulness found in traditional architecture.

Jamie Hallows

Senior Project Manager, Interiors, Santa Barbara

An accomplished designer, Jamie joined Harrison Design’s interiors studio in August 2024. She was formerly the director of interior design with a leading design firm in Santa Barbara for several years. Jamie received her bachelor’s degree in art from Westmont College in Santa Barbara and began her career as a graphic designer. In 2003, she moved to Los Angeles to enroll in UCLA’s three-year Extension Interior Design program, earning her certificate of Interior Design. She worked at several well-established design firms in LA for ten years, before returning to Santa Barbara in 2013 to join a high-end residential and hospitality firm as a senior designer. Jamie serves on the advisory committee of the Santa Barbara City College Interior Design program and is active in a number of local architectural and interior design organizations.

Laura Hermes Reverón

Senior Project Manager, Interiors, Assoc. ASID, Atlanta

Laura Hermes, Associate ASID, is a senior project manager and leads a residential interiors studio in Atlanta. She joined Harrison Design in 2007 after graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. She excels at project management and client relations, using her natural affinity for design and exceptional sense of color in her work.
The Georgia native has spent extended time in the Middle East and Europe, deepening her appreciation of the international nature of design. Along with Harrison Design, Laura worked for eight months on a project with the U.S. Agency of International Development in Cairo to foster growth between the U.S. and Egypt. Laura volunteers for the Bill Harrison Foundation and serves on the ICAA Philip Trammell Shutze Awards Committee.

Frauke Hormann

Senior Project Manager, AIA, Los Angeles

A native of Germany, in 2004 Frauke received a scholarship to attend the M-Arch2 master’s program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in Los Angeles. After earning her Master of Architecture from SCI-Arc in 2006, she joined a local residential architecture firm, where she practiced for eight years with several of her projects garnering local chapter AIA awards, and she joined Harrison Design in 2015. Frauke is particularly adept at managing complicated projects and for taking charge for all phases of a design, from first schematic design drawings through to project completion. Frauke earned a bachelor’s degree from the AKI Academy of Art & Design in the Netherlands and studied interior architecture at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle in Germany. Before her studies, she apprenticed for two years as a carpenter with a company dedicated to historic wind- and watermill restoration in Germany. Her professional experience in architecture also includes expertise in green building and sustainable design.

William Hull

Senior Project Manager, AIA, Santa Barbara

William earned his professional architectural degree from the University of Notre Dame, which included a year in their Rome studies program, where he was able to nurture and refine his love of hand drawing and rendering techniques. Before joining Harrison Design in 2018, he worked for many years in San Francisco, specializing in custom traditional design for projects all over the world. William now runs projects ranging in type from high-end residential to institutional to sacred architecture. As a licensed architect and a stickler for classical detailing and principles, William enjoys applying his knowledge to creating a more enduring, functional, and beautiful built environment.

Robbie Pich

Senior Project Manager, ASSOCIATE AIA, ATLANTA

Robbie earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. His experience includes work with several firms across the country, including in his hometown of Salisbury, Md.; Aspen, Colo., and Atlanta. In 1999, Robbie joined Harrison Design. His work was honored with a 2007 Shutze Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and he received the Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence in 2006.

Daniel Romanoff

Senior Project Manager, Interiors, Los Angeles

Daniel joined the Los Angeles office in 2019 after working for more than 10 years in interior design in New York City, including projects in the Hamptons, Palm Springs, Santa Monica and Palm Beach. He received his degree in interior design at Parsons Art and Design in New York. After graduating, he worked for a number of leading Manhattan-based interior design firms, including Christopher Maya, Inc. and Mark Epstein Designs, and was in management with Schumacher before establishing his own practice in NYC in 2015. Daniel’s training in fine art informs his approach to interiors.

Sean Sims-van der Werff

Senior Project Manager, AIA, LEED Green Associate, Atlanta

As a senior project manager, Sean leads projects in the commercial studio ranging from senior living communities and townhome developments to boutique retail and restaurants. He is an expert at designing extensive amenities programs that promote health, fitness and wellness. Sean joined the firm in 2019 after working on mixed-use and multifamily commissions with Phillips Partnership in Atlanta for almost three years. Passionate about sustainability in his work, Sean earned a LEED Green Associate credential in 2024. He earned his master’s in architecture from Northeastern University in Boston in 2016 and his bachelor’s in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014. Sean frequently volunteers as a mentor to architecture students at Georgia Tech and nearby Kennesaw State University.

Lindsay Weiss

Senior Project Manager, Associate AIA, ATLANTA

A passion for traditional design led Lindsay to Harrison Design, which she joined in 2003. Since then, she’s worked under a number of the firm’s principals and was promoted to Senior Project Manager in 2024. Her architecture expertise spans a wide range of styles, with a focus on exterior and interior detailing. The Michigan native was attracted to architecture as a young girl, as several close relatives worked in the design and construction fields. She began her formal training in high school, before attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and receiving a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1999. After working in New York City for a year, she enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where she earned her Master of Architecture. Still an impassioned learner, Lindsay enjoys mentoring the next generation at Harrison Design. She also shares her knowledge of design as a mentor and volunteer with ACE North Atlanta, a national program to help high school students better understand the architecture, construction and engineering fields.

Qing Xue

Senior Project Manager, AIA, Santa Barbara

Qing joined Harrison Design in 2019, bringing expertise in classical and traditional design developed through four years of work on country houses and university buildings with John Simpson Architects in London and ADAM Architecture in Winchester, England. She brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to high-end residential, institutional and historic restoration projects. With a background in engineering, Qing combines her artistic sensibility with a pragmatic approach, applying creative problem-solving skills. She currently serves on the board of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation and contributed to the master planning for Santa Barbara’s State Street. Born in China, Qing earned her Master of Architecture at Notre Dame as well as a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the university. She received her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in China. An artist in pencil, watercolor and pottery, she brings a deep appreciation for craftsmanship to her work.

Sam Boldea

Director, IT, Atlanta

After receiving his degree in Computer Science at Southern Polytechnic State University, Sam worked as a Technology Systems Manager for over six years before joining Harrison Design 2019 as a consultant. He soon became an integral part of the company, assisting in the move to virtual desktops, which proved pivotal for those working from home during the pandemic. Being approachable is an essential component of Sam’s work ethic. Even the “smallest” issue can significantly impact a user’s day. Sam’s goal is to ensure all of Harrison Design’s employees’ technology needs are met and exceeded so they can perform to the best of their ability.

 

Lee Kinsella

Director, Marketing, Atlanta

Creativity has been life’s defining factor for Marketing Director Lee Kinsella. After earning her bachelor’s degree in Studio Art in 2000, Lee joined Harrison Design as Office Manager, a title she held for more than 10 years while playing a variety of supporting roles in Marketing. With a practiced eye for detail and an inherent ability to distill the salient points of our work, in 2013, she was named Marketing Director, overseeing advertising, public relations, web and social media presence, coordinating between Harrison Design’s six North American offices. Her passion for client relations and project management has made her an invaluable asset to the firm.

Steve Laine

Chief Financial Officer, CPA, Atlanta

Steve, who joined the firm in 2022, is a certified public accountant with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and a Master of Business Administration from Georgia Southwestern University in Americus. His experience encompasses a wide range of industries with responsibility for all financial operations. Most recently, he was chief financial officer of the private equity firm The White Oak Group in Atlanta. Previously, he was the chief financial officer of Georgia Community Support Solutions, based in Atlanta, and, for 11 years, he was chief financial officer of the State Bar of Georgia, a governing body for over 50,000 attorney members.

A member of the Georgia Society of CPA’s Leadership Council for six years, Steve has been active with the Georgia Wing of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol for five years, acting as a finance officer and mission scanner. He has completed over 200 marathons, including twice finishing one marathon in each of the 50 states.

 

Teresa Nagley

Director, HR, Atlanta

Before becoming Harrison Design’s Director of Human Resources, Teresa skillfully navigated the road map between artistry and numbers for over 15 years as Manager of Accounts Receivable. With over 30 years of experience in accounting and 13 in Human Resources, Teresa’s professional journey began with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Georgia State University. Some of her duties include compliance, employee relations, benefits, HRIS implementation and health & safety, a pivotal role during the pandemic. Her gracious orientation to new associates makes their first day a secure experience as they begin their tenure with Harrison Design well-informed and ready for work.

Angela Urbaites

Controller, Atlanta

With more than 25 years of accounting experience, Angela joined Harrison Design in 2025, bringing a diverse background across industries such as food and beverage, bioscience, and, most recently, automotive finance and insurance. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky, and in 2000 was designated a Certified Public Accountant by the State of Kentucky. While Angela grew up in a small town in eastern Kentucky, her career has taken her to West Virginia, Illinois and Georgia. In addition to serving in typical accountant/controller roles, Angela has served as the finance/accounting lead of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation teams.

Angela is an avid supporter of animal rescue organizations, especially FurKids, Georgia’s largest animal rescue and shelter group.

Harrison Design is a full-service firm specializing in architectural design, including site design, interior architectural design and construction observation. The firm was founded in Atlanta in 1991 and quickly grew, earning an outstanding reputation for client service and excellence in design and execution. After 12 years, the company expanded to California and it now has six independent offices across the U.S. Along with residential architecture, Harrison Design offers interior design services and landscape architecture and has specialized commercial and sacred architecture studios.
